- Hi, my name's Rich Harrington, and today we're gonna explore how you could take advantage of Facebook Live. In this course we're gonna take a comprehensive look at what it takes to actually go live on Facebook. We'll tackle this from both the simplest approaches of using a smartphone, all the way up to professional multi-camera productions. Now, we've got a lotta ground to cover so let me walk you through what you're going to learn. We'll start by a quick overview of what is Facebook Live. Going over some of its strengths and the real major benefits of the platform.
Then, we'll talk about different ways of actually going live. There are many different ways to go live on Facebook, including a business page, as well as a personal page, and I wanna make sure that you are comfortable with the different options that are open to you. We'll then talk about using Facebook Live from a phone or tablet. This is particularly useful if you are on the go and a mobile user. It will often require a cellular data plan, but you can also patch into wifi at a venue or a location.
We'll talk about using Facebook Live from a web browser, using just a standard laptop or a desktop computer, and this is a way that most of you will publish right from your desks or remote locations using a laptop. We'll then explore a more advanced workflow looking at options that you can use to improve the quality of the production using things such as an external camera, some specialized hardware, et cetera. And we'll even explore a multi-camera workflow so you could patch several different camera angles into Facebook Live so you can then show different parts of the action, or do something that matches more of the production value of a television show.
And then finally, I'll share with you some strategies for after the event to help you know what you should be doing after the Facebook Live broadcast. Things such as posting a higher quality file and making sure that you continue to promote the event once it is over. Now, I'd like to give give just a little bit about my background. I'm a professional storyteller and this takes on many different forms in my day to day life. Now, as an educator, I have published more that 40 books and 150 video courses. But everyday I publish a website about photography called 'Photo Focus' and we routinely use Facebook Live and other live platforms to connect with our readers.
This site has been published now for 20 years. And I also speak at conferences and have my own media production company, and live events are a big part of what we do, both for clients and for our own productions. And Facebook Live has quickly become a very popular platform that has really risen up due to Facebook's popularity and ease of use. Plus the fact that it's currently a free platform which makes it very appealing in that it reaches a lot of people and it doesn't involve a lot of cost. Now, through the years we've worked on a lot of different projects for many different companies, primarily focusing on high tech companies, working with government agencies, and nonprofits.
And I do also find myself working with television networks and other technology companies to help them out with their workflows. I've been publishing video to the internet, now, since the early '90s and a lot has changed. From low quality signals and having to do tons of work with dial-up modems to then take hours to download the video to instantaneous publishing right from a smartphone. But the principles are still the same. It's always a balance of technology plus storytelling. So in this course I'm gonna make sure that you have all the aspects you need to put together a good production.
We'll address some of the behind the scenes things as well and best techniques to make sure you're organized, but we'll also make sure that you really know the technology inside and out. Alright, let's go ahead and get started.
