- [Instructor] There are many prerequisites for upgrading to exchange server 2019. The first one would be that we need to have the domain and forest level set to at least 2012 R2 or newer. As far as the operating system goes, we need to have Windows Server 2019 standard or data center. Better versions of Exchange Server 2019 allowed you to use Windows Server 2016. However, once the released manufacturing version came out, 2019 was required. We cannot install over previous versions of Exchange. So you can't take Exchange Server 2019 and install over a 2016 for example, you have to install 2019 on to a different server. So it has to be a new installation and then you migrate over all the mailboxes, and other database information.
