- [Instructor] When you're trying to locate data … within large lists, in particular if you're trying to do it … at the character level, it can be problematic. … What can be helpful at times … is the use of what we call a wildcard. … And in the blue panel to the right … you'll see the two characters we're about to use, … the asterisk and the question mark. … And the definitions, although valid, … don't mean a whole lot until we see some actual examples. … Let's look at column A. … These product numbers, like a lot of product numbers, … probably are positional. … Meaning, maybe for example, … the first two characters refer to the color of the item, … or the size, or where it was made, the time it was made. … What we care about for the moment … is locating those entries here … where H is the third character. … Now, H appears in row eight, appears in row 12, … in the third position. … But elsewhere it might appear as well, … like in row 16 in the fifth position, … it might be elsewhere too. …
