- [Instructor] The US federal government, like governments around the world, lets its citizens register inventions, trademarks, and other forms of intellectual property to protect those valuable ideas against unauthorized use. In general terms, patents protect processes, while trademarks protect words or phrases and images used to identify companies, products, and services. If you want to search for existing patents and trademarks in the US, you can go to the US Patent and Trademark Office website. This website is available at uspto.gov. And you can see here, you have information about patents and trademarks, you can find quick links to application and tools. And also if you're new to intellectual property, you can learns the basics, patents, trademarks, and finding help in your geographic area. Let's say that you want to search for a specific trademark.
