Join Dennis Taylor for an in-depth discussion in this video Removing extra spaces with TRIM, part of Excel 2011 for the Mac: Advanced Formulas and Functions.
- The existence of unwanted spaces in Excel…can be a real problem at times.…The list in column A on this worksheet, called "Trim"…is pretty obvious, at least in some…of the initial entries there.…We've got leading space in front of Hendricks,…we've got multiple spaces between Hendricks and Eric,…we see that happening in some other cells here too.…A few leading spaces in row seven,…and where are there trailing spaces?…They might be all over the place, they're hard to see.…Now, with data like this,…what happens if we sort this data?…I'm going to click on one of the cells here,…and then on the Data tab in the ribbon,…I'll simply click Ascending right here,…and we see what happens?…Those entries with leading spaces go to the top of the list.…
It doesn't correct the data, but it certainly gives us…a sort that we really wouldn't want to see here.…So let's clean up the data.…We don't have to do the sorting ahead of time.…In fact, I'll undo it here just to make that point.…We can look at the data no matter how it's arranged here.…
