How does AI work?

- [Narrator] The basic AI system really consists of two parts, a knowledge base and an inference engine. The knowledge base is our facts about a specific application. We can think about it as all the data that we want to put into a system to have the AI be aware of. And then the inference engine is rules our logic that are applied to go through and parse that knowledge base to help the system or the program understand what's there. These types of systems serve the basis for software from all sorts of big companies ranging from SAP to Oracle, as an example. Now when we think about this large mass of data that we're going to pull in, what's sometimes called a training dataset, as an example. It's not enough to just have that data. We need a way for AI to understand what that means and then draw inferences from it. This starts with what we call search. Search is the fundamental technique in AI.
