- [Instructor] When you analyze a process in terms of whether or not it can meet customer requirements, you first need to calculate the process capability ratio. To calculate the process capability ratio which is the voice of the process, you need to know three distinct measurements. The first is the customer's upper specification. Second, is the customer's lower specification. So, for example, if you're filling bottles of olive oil, the upper specification might be 12.1 ounces and the lower specification might be 11.9 ounces. You also need to know the standard deviation of the process. So, this is not something you can just estimate. You actually do have to analyze the process and get these values through experimentation and sample. You calculate the process capability ratio using the following formula and that is the upper specification minus the lower specification divided by six times the standard deviation.
