Count the number of blank cells within a range with the COUNTBLANK function; when using formulas to test if a cell is blank, use the ISBLANK function. Don't use zero and blank interchangeably in ranges where averages are used. When copying ranges that include blank cells, consider using the Paste Special option Skip Blanks.
