The RANK function lets you rank a value compared with other values in a range based either on a highest-to-lowest (the default setting) or lowest-to-highest arrangement. Two or more entries share the same ranking position if their values are identical, but the ranking numbers that follow will not appear.
- [Voiceover] We are looking at a worksheet called RANK.…And we've got some data over in columns A and B,…employee name and salary.…We like to know the rank of each salary here compared…with all of the others.…And we might want to eventually want to add more…data to this list.…Although we could sort the data to get these results,…why not have the numbers right here all the time.…In other words if we sorted by salary, by employee name,…we always want to see that ranking.…Equal, rank, left parenthesis, here's the number we are…talking about, comma, we are comparing with all of the…others in column B.…
There is nothing else in column B except that text…on top and these numbers.…We will have an answer immediately…and that is from top down.…This is the 71 highest salary.…As I double click to copy this down the column,…you might notice, perhaps right away, two of these are tied.…These are tied for second place here.…Scrolling up and down this list of about 100 names we will…not see a number three in here.…Possibly there could be three number twos, we don't…
