The WEEKDAY function, when referencing a cell containing a date, returns a value from 1 to 7, corresponding to Sunday, Monday, etc. Apply a custom format of DDDD or DDD to display the full spelling of the day or its three-letter abbreviation. Useful for tabulating orders, sales, etc. by day of the week.
- [Voiceover] Knowing day of the week…for certain kinds of data can be really valuable,…think of sales, transactions, shipping, orders, workflow.…We're looking at a worksheet called Weekday.…We want to know the day of the week for these sales.…Maybe this is a company that sells large equipment,…they don't sell every day.…We want to know which day of the week these sales were made.…The function is called Weekday,…left parenthesis,…we're clicking in cell A2,…the answer we get is correct,…but at first we might be saying,…"Well, that's not that helpful."…We can only get the numbers one through seven,…one means Sunday, two means Monday, and so on,…seven is Saturday.…
Ultimately this is a valuable number,…and we might want to work with the numbers,…but it's gonna be a lot easier…if we simply change the display of this.…Let's go to Format Cells,…Control + 1 is a fast way to get there,…you can also do a right click and go to Format Cells,…and what we want to do here is to go to Custom,…and where you see General here in the white panel…
