The LARGE function returns the second (or third, fourth, fifth, etc.) largest value in a selected range. The SMALL function returns the second (or third, fourth, fifth, etc.) smallest value in a selected range. Neither function provides the location of the result, simply the value of the result.
- [Voiceover] On the worksheet called Large,…we've got some data in columns A through F.…If I click on one of the cells,…in column A for example,…double click the bottom edge,…a quick reminder, we've got 401 rows of data here.…And off to the right in column J,…I've got some words indicating what it is I need to get to…relatively quickly.…This list may grow, it might shrink,…so when I use formulas here,…I will be referring to entire columns.…I want to know what the highest salary is,…it's in column E.…I use the function Max, right here in cell I2.…Equal max, left parentheses.…
Since the list will grow,…I'll use an entire column reference.…There it is.…Don't need to press the right parentheses.…Return, there it is.…Sometimes you want to know the second highest,…third highest.…The function is called Large.…So, where are we looking?…Once again, in column E, comma.…And now we put in the number that we're interested in.…I'm interested in finding the second highest.…I'll put in the number two,…third highest three and so on.…
