Join Jess Stratton for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating your first item, part of Selling on Etsy.
Now that we've created a shop and it has an official name, we can't do anything else in Etsy until we start listing items. So to start listing your items, click the blue plus sign under List a New Item. This is what the screen's going to look like for every single item that you want to add to your Etsy shop. The first thing that you need to tell Etsy is who made the item. I'm going to select I Did, and then you have to say, What is it? In this case, it's a finished product. I'm going to start adding a beautiful starfish sterling silver wrap ring.
I can choose when I made it. I am going to say it's made to order, because this is something that I'm going to make once I get the order from the person who's going to buy it. Under Categories, here's where I tell Etsy what I'm actually selling. In this case, because it's a ring, it's jewelry. From here on in, I can choose some more subcategories, such as Ring. And finally, the type of ring. In this case, it's a sterling silver ring. I also have to tell Etsy whether it's a physical item or a digital file.
I can sell prints directly from etsy. In this case, because it's a ring it is a physical item. Scrolling down, here's where I can add variations to my listing. For example, is there variations in color, finish, flavor even? Now because this is a ring, and it's a custom made ring, the person who buys it can chose their size. This ring is available in sizes six through eight. So under variations I'm going to chose Size. As you'll see, for every variation that you choose you can get a sub choice that you can make.
For example, because I chose size and Etsy knows I'm selling a ring, it's telling me to select the scale of that particular variation. So Etsy will walk you through every single choice that you could possibly make in your variations. Now that I've said that the scale is in US ring size, here's where I can choose all the possible selections that a buyer could make for that ring. So it's available in size 6. And I'm going to chose again, because it's also available in size 7.
And finally one more size, size 8. I can select whether that ring is in stock, and if I decide at anytime that I made the wrong choice or maybe I don't want to offer that particular variation anymore, I can simply click the x and it goes away. Now you can also choose more than one variation. For example, I've chosen size, but I can also go back to select a property and choose another variation. For example, style. In this case, because there's no particular drop down available for a ring style, I could add my own if I wanted.
For example, maybe a finish type. I can click Add. Here's my options. And if at any time I decide I don't want them, I can either delete one at a time, or delete the entire variation by clicking the x at the top right of that property. So now that we've selected the variations of that ring, here's where I get to choose an item title. This is the title that you are looking at while you browsed Etsy before to see what other people were selling. For example, this is a sterling silver wrap ring with starfish.
I get 140 characters to choose from, so I could make it as descriptive as I want to. Up next, let's add photos. You can choose up to five photos per piece of jewelry. And it is important to note that the first photo you choose is going to be the one that Etsy uses for search results. To start adding photos, click the plus sign under Add Photos. And now you can browse your file system on your computer to quickly find the photos that you want. In this case, I can click on it and preview each photo.
When I've made my decision, click the blue Choose button. It will upload the photo, and if I want to add more I can click the plus sign beside Add Photos again, add another picture, and it's added. Finally, in this video we're going to add a description about our product. Here's where we could enter a much longer description to tell people fully about what we're really selling. You can answer questions here, for example, tell people what variations are available to them. For example, size, shape, finish, all of those variations that we added before, and you can make it much longer than that item title.
So now, we have added what it is. We've added a title. We've put our photos in, and we've added a description. Up next, we're going to add tags to this list, add some materials, price, and shipping options, and then we'll be ready to start opening our shop.
