- [Instructor] So far, we've been glossing over Beats because it's important to have a good foundation with Logstash first. In this lesson, we'll be digging into the topic. You might be wondering what Beats are available and what do they actually do? Heartbeat is the Beat for tracking uptime of your systems. Filebeat is for files, usually log files. Metricbeat is for shipping system metrics. Packetbeat for network data, et cetera. In this course, we're just going to focus on Filebeat. Beats were created to solve a very specific problem. Logstash is overkill for a lot of what it's being used for. Logstash uses JRuby, which is an implementation of Ruby that runs on the Java virtual machine. By default, it's configured to set aside one gig of memory for the JVM. That's a waste when you're just using it to ship logs to a central Elastic Stack.
