- [Voiceover] Hello, I'm Oliver Schinkten and welcome to this week's episode of Teacher Tech Tips. This week I want to share one of my favorite web tools, Symbaloo. Symbaloo acts as a dashboard or homepage that will help you stay organized, give you easy access to websites that you use often, and allow you to curate and share resources with others. Now, Symbaloo is a free tool that anyone can use, but in this video I want to show you Symbaloo for education. The educational version of Symbaloo preloads some suggested resources, it has less advertising, and it makes it easier to share your resources.
Now in order to access the educational version, you can navigate to edu.symbaloo.com and symbaloo is spelt S-Y-M-B-A-L-O-O. Now I'm currently on the homepage and I'm going to click in the upper right corner on Create Your Free Account. Now from here you can create your account using an Edmodo account, a Clever account, or others such as Facebook, Google+, or Twitter. I'm going to create one using my email address, however. So down here, I'll enter in my name.
As you can see by default, there are already a bunch of tiles which appear here and most are related to education because this is the educational version of Symbaloo. Now, this is a great list of resources. Many of these I use such BrainPOP, Weebly, Edmodo. However, there are others that I don't use and for these we can simply right-click and choose to delete them. So here for Walmart, I'll click right-click and delete it. Same with eBay and Walgreens and I'm gonna go through and get rid of some of the tiles that I don't use.
Now, in the middle there are several other tiles that Symbaloo recommends. First of all, they have one titled Cloud Services in which they recommend tiles for Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and Evernote. They have presentation tools, math tools, science tools, and others. I'm going to click back here and you can get rid of these if you want. For instance, I'm going to get rid of the math tools, say the reading and writing tools and the history tools. Now, if we want to rearrange the tiles, we can do that as well.
So we can choose to drag these tiles anywhere we would like them on this webmix. In order to do so, I'll click on a tile and drag it to an empty tile spot. I'm going to put some of my resources down here. And I want to put some of the tools that I use more often up here at the top. So you can arrange this however works best for you. Now if we want to add a tile with a different resource that doesn't appear here, we can do that as well.
If I hover over a blank tile, I can click Add New Tile and this pop-up appears to the left. At the bottom, I can click on Browse tiles by category and Symbaloo will recommend different tiles based on categories. Here for Career and Education they offer several different ones including some learning management systems. There's ones for Science, Reference, and a whole bunch of other categories. I'm going to click off of this and click to add a tile again.
In this case, I want to add a tile for LinkedIn and it doesn't appear on here already so I'm going to click on the second option, which is search for a tile. So I want to see if there's already a LinkedIn tile that exists within Symbaloo. I'll type in LinkedIn and as you can see one does already exist. I'll click here and it adds it to my webmix. Now I'm going to move that down here so it's next to my other social media tiles. Now I also want to add one for Global School Play Day. If I click Add a New Tile and go to Search Tile...
I'll find that there isn't one that already exists. So in this case, I can create a new tile from scratch. So here I'll click Create a Tile. I can enter in the address that it's for, globalschoolplayday.com, and this is a website and then if I give Symbaloo a little while, they're usually good at identifying the name of the website as well as a sample image from the website. So as you can see, they've identified it as Global School Play Day and then they give us this option for an image.
Now, I don't like that image very much so I'm going to click on the different image. I could also choose an icon or upload an image from my computer. Here they give me this image and I can choose to crop it however I want. So I'll move it like this and then click Use Selection to Tile. So my tile will now look like this. I'm going to click on Save. And as you can see, it's now added the Global School Play Day tile.
I'm going to move that down here to my Resources and that is a tile that we created from scratch. You could create a new tile for something like your class website, a YouTube channel, or other resources that you wanted to have easy access to, but it didn't have a tile that already exists in Symbaloo. Now we can even customize our webmix further by clicking on Options, which appears at the top in the middle. Click Options and it gives us some other options.
To rename it, we can change the wallpaper. So here I'll change the background to a wooden look and there are some other choices. So you can go through and customize this even further. I'm going to close that bar. And if we want to share this webmix with others, we can also click on the share icon. In this case, it's grayed out right now because we can't select it and the reason is is that I have not yet verified my account. As you can see, when we created our account it tells us that they've sent an email to that address that we signed up with and we have to verify our account before we have all of the features and functions that come with the free account.
So now that I've verified our account, you can see that the share button appears and I'll click it and we can enter in some information. So first of all, the name of our webmix, we can give a description for it, we can add related words so that it's easier to find, and then we can choose whether or not we want it to be a public webmix, which will enter the gallery and you can look in the gallery to see if there's webmixes that others have created that you want to use, or we can choose to keep it private and share with friends. I'm going to click, in this case, on Private and then Share My Webmix.
Once I've clicked on Share My Webmix, it will give us some options. We can copy this link down below and share it with people who we want to share it with, for instance our class, and they can access it like that. We can also click here to get an embed code to embed it on a website or we can send it out via social media. For right now, I'm going to close this out. And in the next video, let's take a look at another use for Symbaloo and that's to curate tools and resources for your class and then share it with your students.
