- Points get a bad rap in gamification. People view them as a manipulative, externally-driven device, to get people to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Unfortunately, sometimes this is the case. In these instances, a learner is performing meaningless activities just to receive points. At best, the learner becomes bored, and at worst, demotivated. However, if used properly, a point system can be a highly-effective tool for motivating learners. Here are a couple ways to do it. First, tie the points to performance. Connect the points to a system that is measurement-based as opposed to completion-based. What this means is that the points should be awarded based on degree of correctness of an answer or a behavior, not simply if the learner is getting the question or behavior right or wrong. The points should tell the learner how well he or she performed. So if an action is worth 10 points and the learner only learns five, the learner knows that she only did half as well as she could…
