- Have you ever been in a training session where the instructor came up to you and said, "You're doing a good job," or, "You're doing it wrong," then they simply walk away towards another participant? Most of us have. This is a prime example of the trainer providing poor feedback. Feedback can be difficult, but when used the right way, it can be one of the most effective strategies to improve learning. Here are six rules you should apply to do so effectively. Rule one, don't go overboard. When a participant repeatedly struggles, it's tempting to want to give them a lot of praise when they achieve some level of success, but this can actually do more harm than good. For starters, insincere praise is easy to detect. What's more, too much praise can convey a sense of low expectation and as a result can be demotivating. Rule two, correct quietly.
