Make badges meaningful

- It's pretty great to be able to show off your accomplishments and gamification badges allow us to do this. A badge is simply a visible sign of mastery or achievement. It's typically a token that can be displayed for others to see. It can be physical like a belt, ribbon or a cloth patch or in the case of most gamification platforms, a digital or online display of a symbol, stamp or medallion. Badges are recognized and honored within a certain community. For badges to be effective at motivating learners, the badge itself must be valued by both the person who earned the badge and by the community or group of which that person is a member. It must have social relevance. If the badge has little or no relevance to the people within the group, the badge will quickly lose value. For instance, the Boy Scout Bird Study merit badge has a great deal of value within the Boy Scout community because it's a merit badge and it takes time and effort to earn but the badge itself has less value within…
