Creating a new course on the Litmos platform is a very intuitive process. See how Litmos walks you through the steps necessary to create and view courses from the course's page.
- [Instructor] Now that we have a better understanding of the behind-the-scenes setup of the Litmos platform, let's take a look at how to begin creating a new course. There's a couple places that we can do this from. The first is from the dashboard. Now, with the newest release of Litmos, you can customize your dashboard, so your dashboard may not look the way that mine does. However, if you have quick links on your dashboard, you'll see them right over here, Create a Course, Create a User, Create a Team. We can begin creating a course from here. If I click on that button, it brings us to the course creation page.
Going to back out of here. The other place that we can do this is by accessing our course page. So on the left hand side, because I'm using vertical navigation, I'm going to click on the Courses tab. And this brings us to a page that shows all the courses that are available on our platform, or in our account. Now, you can see here that there are several such as Budget Like a Boss, Communicating Effectively, these are ones that have been added by Litmos and appear in My Account. Here you can see the library they're in, whether or not they're active, the date created, as well as the author.
Now to add a new course, on the right-hand side I'm going to click the green Create A New Course button. Yours may be a different color depending on the theme that you set up. I'll click that, and it brings us to this course creation page. The first thing I'm going to do is to name my course. I'll title this one, New Hire Orientation. We can leave a description, a reference code to make it easier to organize and to refer to. I'm going to type one in here, I'll type in NHO18.
Determine whether or not you want your course to be active. In this case, since we're going to be working with it more, I'm going to leave it active, and then you can leave a course image. I do recommend adding an image to represent the course. I feel like it gives it some character, and allows the learners to associate that image with the course and be able to identify it quicker. So, in order to do this, you can click on the Chose File button, and select a file from your computer. Now, if you don't have a file already that you want to use for your course one, I do have a tool that I recommend, a free tool again, on the internet.
And that is Canva, at Canva.com. This is an awesome way to create graphics. And if I go back over to the Litmos platform, notice here that we need one that has the dimensions 450 by 253 pixels. So when I go back to Canva, they have some templates that we can use, otherwise up at the top we can use Custom Dimensions. Want to check that out again, it's 450 by 253. I'll type that in here. Click on Design.
And it gives us our template. So here is that size, and we can begin creating this. I'm going to go ahead and title this Course Image, done. And off to the left, you can do several things such as add different elements, add text, change the background, and several other things. So I'm going to create this as a yellow background. I can change that color if I want to, maybe make it lighter. I'll go ahead and do that. Next, I'll go up to Elements and search for a picture. I'm going to type in Person.
And I'll add this, so I'm obviously just quickly creating an image here and I'm not going to go over a lot with Canvas, but just showing you that this is something you can use to create one. And here with text, let's say I'll add in text here and type in New Hire. Close this up a little bit, and I'll move it right over here. It's not great, but I did create an image to associate the course with, and when I'm done I can download that to my computer and use that image.
And remember that it was the dimensions that we needed. Now, I've already created one, so I'm going to go access that one here. I'll click on the Choose File, and I do have one here that I did as a practice. It is the New Hire PNG, and when I'm done, I'll click on Save. Now, once I have that image uploaded and I've clicked on Save, it will bring us to our course page. And here's where we can do a number of things. We can access the subtabs, and we can also begin adding content.
So we can add content by clicking here, and choosing to either upload content, to create new content, or to browse for content that we already have created. This is something that we'll take a look at in the next chapter. First, let's take a look at other important aspects of the course.
