- You're familiar with writing assignments but have you heard about writing-to-learn activities? They're informal writing exercises that focus on the process rather than the product. There are over 50 different writing-to-learn activities and as you have probably guessed, many lend themselves to being done with social media. In his book on student writing in the quantitative disciplines, Patrick Bahls covers all parts of the writing process. He has some really innovative writing activities including several in a category called micro-genres. He encourages using Twitter, Facebook, and meme generators to ask students to distill concepts into short passages. For a biology or anatomy-physiology class, you might ask students to describe the functions of the lymphatic system. For a community college class, Anatomy-Physiology 100, student Tweets might look like this: "#lymphaticsystem acts as a highway, "transporting white blood cells "to and from the lymph nodes into the bones. "#AP100."…
