A quick look at the process

- [Instructor] I'm sure you've realized by now SAP is an extremely powerful planning tool. But as a planner it's not always easy to know what truly requires your attention in order to avoid material shortages. This is where the MRP list comes in. The MRP list will tell you what's hot and what's not. Through the use of traffic lights you will define what is a high priority issue versus a lower priority. Now you can manage the exceptions instead of reviewing every single material. This makes for a much more efficient use of your time as a planner. Let's start with an overview of the planning process. All material planning functions begin with demand. This is forecast in customer orders. Next, is the execution of the planning run. This is where SAP will analyze the demand signals against current inventory, and determine when shortages will occur. This course will focus on the last step of reviewing the planning run results, also known as the MRP list. Depending on the needs of your organization, this review could be a daily task, but should definitely occur no less than once a week. Much like building a brick wall, the planning run will focus on one material, or brick, at a time. Once the planning run is complete each material will have an individual MRP list generated. During the planning run SAP will create and assign exception messages to MRP elements if that element, such as a planned order, requires some action in order to avoid a material shortage. If no issues exist, then it's possible for a material to have no exception messages. But as a planner you should expect to see a few issues coming out of each planning run that may require your attention. The next section will discuss exception messages in more detail.
