Design technologist Colin McCrone uses Dynamo Studio and Autodesk Revit to describe surfaces of rotation including developable surfaces. Radially symmetric surfaces can be divided into planar panels if sections through the surface are perpendicular to the axis of rotation and radially oriented.
- [Narrator] Now, we'll look at the implications…of paneling curved surfaces,…and we'll start with surfaces of revolution.…These are surfaces which are created by revolving…a section curve around an axis.…We have two base surfaces here.…The first on the left,…which is created with the group at the top,…is a straight line that is revolved around a center point.…Because sections through this surface that are horizontal…will always be circular arcs,…and sections that are radial will always be straight lines,…we know that a straight up parametric division…of this surface will always yield flat panels,…because the parameters along the curve are evenly spaced.…
We can check this out quickly…with LunchBox's…PanelQuad node.…We'll specify perhaps 10 or 20 divisions…in the u and v directions,…and we can verify that they're planar by passing a polycurve…through the points…and asking curve is planar.…For any division of this sort,…with this type of surface,…the answer should be true.…
