As I mentioned in the video "Checking Drupal's requirements,"…you need three systems installed on your computer in order to run Drupal.…Let's review.…First, Drupal was written in the PHP language so you'll need a PHP interpreter to run it.…Second, Drupal stores all of its information and settings into a database.…Most commonly, that's the MySQL database program.…Third, because it's a web program you need a way to serve up the HTML pages that it produces to the Web.…Usually that's through the Apache Web server, although you could use another one such as IIS.…
When you put these all together, Apache plus MySQL plus PHP,…it creates what they call an AMP stack.…Add Drupal to that…and you get a DAMP sack.…You can cobble all these bits together yourself, but the easiest way to do it is by downloading them all in one package.…When I recorded Drupal 6 Essential Training in 2008…to two best AMP stacks were MAMP for MacOS X and WAMP for Windows.…For MAMP go to mamp.info,…and for WAMP go to wampserver.com.…

Q: In the "Getting Drupal up and running fast" movie, the author downloads and install the Acquia Drupal stack installer, but I can't find it on the Acquia downloads page (acquia.com/downloads).
A: After the course was released, Acquia changed their branding. What used to be called the "stack installer" is now "Acquia Dev Desktop" -- that's the one you want. It includes Acquia Drupal, Apache, MySQL and PHP.
