Installations explained: Acquia Dev Desktop

- [Instructor] As I mentioned earlier, one of the best ways to get ready to take this course and do some Drupal development of your own, is to use Acquia's Dev Desktop. It's an all in one solution that works on your computer and it's secure, it's free, and it works really well. Head over to dev.acquia.com. And in this video, I'm going to show you how to install it, and get your first site installed so you're ready to take the course. All right, at dev.acquia.com, click the download now link for Acquia Dev Desktop. That's going to take me over to a page that says am I a MAC or I'm a PC? Well, I'm on a MAC. So I'm going to click the MAC download. It's about 111 Meg. If you're on a windows machine, of course you're going to click the WIN download button. You'll note this is the most current version at the time of this recording. And it was released on August 12th, 2020. I would note, even if you already have Dev Desktop installed you should download this version, because it supports the latest version of Drupal again at the time of this recording, and your version of Dev Desktop may not. Don't worry, Dev Desktop will back up all of your current sites as it installs the new version. Once that's downloaded, unpack it and go ahead and click Acquia Dev Desktop installer. You may need to put your username and password in. You will absolutely need administration privileges to the machine that you're working on for this course. So if you're using a work computer you may need to talk to your IT department. All right, when the welcome screen pops up, click next, click next, click next, and next. And with this most recent release, you're going to be asked to just provide a little bit of information. The only things that are required are name, email, and level of Drupal experience though you can fill in the others as well. And then click next, click next, and next, and next. Dev Desktop is going to install, go ahead and pause the video and come back when your installation is complete. All right, once your installation is complete go ahead and click finish. Dev Desktop is going to show up, if you upgraded, you'll still see your sites from your old version here, I'm on a brand new installation. Either way, this message is going to pop up and we're going to start from scratch, I don't have an existing Drupal site. Again depending on when you take this course, these installation profiles will change. At the time of this recording Drupal 9.0.3 is the most recent and that's what you to get. The most recent version of Drupal and in this case again, it's 9.0.3, click install. I'm just going to call this Drupalville and I'm going to change my local site name to Drupalville, we're going to update that later. You'll note that the URL then is reflected in the site name. So that's just the easiest way to go. And it's at port 8083, that's the default for Aqua's Dev Desktop. You'll need to be using at least PHP 7.3.X, but it's probably always best to just use the most recent version of PHP. Drupal nine requires PHP 7.3 or higher. We're going to create a new database, and the database name is going to be Drupalville. Again, you can change that if you want, but it's easiest just to leave it at the defaults, click finish. Now Dev Desktop is going to download the Drupal distribution. This takes just a moment and then we'll set up our site. Well we're ready to go. Click on the local site link at the very top. And it's going to open your Drupal installation. If you'd like to choose a different language than English go ahead and choose one, otherwise click save and continue. We're going to stick with the standard installation profile please, click save and continue. And Drupal's going to install 42 modules, and then present us with a set up screen. You can call your site anything you want, I'm going to call it Drupalville. We're going to update that later. Now the email address here doesn't need to be real. It's on your own desktop, it's private, it's secure. So I'm just going to put in email@email.com, and I'm going to use the username and password of admin and admin. Now again, I would never obviously do this on a site that's out on the internet somewhere, but this is completely secure. Go ahead and choose your country, and your default time zone. I'm in the Eastern time zone, so in New York works for me. And typically when I use Dev Desktop I uncheck receive email notifications because again it's a local system and it's completely secure. Leave check for updates automatically checked that's important, and uncheck receive email notifications click save, and continue. Well you should see this screen. And so congratulations, you've installed Drupal using Dev Desktop. Anytime you want to take a break and come back to the course, you'll start Dev Desktop, Apache and my SQL will turn on. You'll see your site listed here and you'll just click on local site. But once again, congratulations you've installed Drupal, and you're ready to head to the next section of the course.
