What is JavaScript?

And, yet another term you'll be coming across as you get into web design is JavaScript. JavaScript is a scripting language that was developed by Netscape way back in 1995, and it's become increasingly popular and useful as time has gone by. JavaScript is a language that interacts with XHTML, and enables you to add dynamic content to your pages, like rollover buttons, or you can use it to automatically resize a browser window, or even check for browser compatibility. Fortunately, like the other web languages we've already talked about, you don't need to know how to write a lick of JavaScript to use it in {italic}Dreamweaver,{plain} which is fortunate because JavaScript if much more complicated to write than XHTML. {italic}Dreamweaver{plain} provides you with lots of JavaScript actions in the form of what it calls Behaviors.

Not only that, but there are tons of other behaviors available online that you can download and install into {italic}Dreamweaver{plain} to even further extend it's capabilities, all without having to write any JavaScript yourself. We'll be talking about extending {italic}Dreamweaver's {plain}behaviors in the chapter on behaviors. Now, I also need to point out that, if you don't want to sound like a web newbie, don't confuse JavaScript with Java. Java is a high level programming language that was developed by Sun Microsystems. Netscape just licensed the name Java from Sun in the hopes of increasing acceptance of JavaScript.

And, it seemed to work because like I said, JavaScript is in heavy use today.
