What is DHTML?

Another term you'll probably run across as you get further into the world of web design Dynamic HTML, or DHTML. DHTML is essentially a collection of different technologies that can include any combination of XHTML, Java Script -- which we'll discuss in the next movie -- CSS, and DOM, or Document Object Model. By combining these technologies, you can create more dynamic content than what basic HTML or XHTML can provide. For example, some things made possible by DHTML include: Animating objects on your page, letting the user drag items around on the page, and complicated image rollovers.

Juts like with XHTML, DHTML effects in {italic}Dreamweaver{plain} are coded behind the scenes so you don't need to know how to write the HTML yourself. But, of all the different technologies we're looking at in this chapter, DHTML probably has the most serious cross platform and browser issues. Certain DHTML effects are supported quite differently by different web browsers, which can sometimes result in undesired effects. Fortunately, {italic}Dreamweaver{plain} has tool that let you target specific browsers to check out how your page will display in them. We'll be getting into that a little later as well, when we talk about working with DHTML in {italic}Dreamweaver.{plain}
