- The challenge was to find a complicated scene that appeared overwhelming with detail. I wanted you to make a choice of materials but thinking about the power of mark making. So thinking about minimum marks but still creating a convincing drawing paying attention to the light and shadow but using blocks of tone, using grays or color. I choose a busy harbor scene with lots of houses in the background and boats in the foreground. What was really nice was viewing it from this angle, was the sun was just setting to the right hand side of me, which casts this really strong shadow onto the boats. And it also just captured odd areas of light on the top of rooftops. So the position of the sun was revealing areas of the light and shade right in front of me. Working on a panoramic sketch pad so I can draw over both sides of the page. And I'm starting with the fine line, the 0.5 mm pen just to get the basic marks in.
