In this video, author Shaun Bryant shows you how to create a new DraftSight layer.
- [Narrator] So as usual, we're staying in our 15_layers.dwg file. And what we're going to do now is look at creating a new layer for our DraftSight drawing. So once again, we're going to go to the Home tab on the ribbon into the Layers panel and go to our Layer Manager like so. And you'll see that we've got a new icon in the Layers Manager there or I can use the keyboard shortcut ALT and N. Now we have touched on this previously in other chapters of the course, but what we're doing in this entire chapter is covering layers in its entirety, so we are going to touch on some of the things that we've already touched on a little bit already.
So I'm going to click on New and I'm going to create a new layer called A-Windows like so and I'll press Enter once I've created that name. Now one of the things that you'll notice in DraftSight is as soon as you press Enter for a new layer name, it automatically sets it up alphabetically. So you can see there, there's all my layers beginning with A and there's A-Windows that I've created. So make sure it's selected and what we'll do is we'll just set some properties for it.
So line color, it's going to be Windows, so normally in the dropdown there I'd go specify color and it's going to be a blue sort of color, Windows tend to be represented in a blue on a lot of drawings. So we'll go for that blue there let's say, so that's color 140. And what I'll do now is I'll click on OK for the color. Line style, we're going to leave that as a continuous solid line, line weight we might change that, it's using default at the moment, but you'll notice that there's a lot of no point nor nines there.
So what we'll do is we'll just select 9.9 millimeters there, there's our line weight. Do we want it to be transparent? Now you expect Windows to be transparent, but that's not what it does. It makes the layer transparent in your DraftSight drawing, which we don't really need to worry about. Print style we'll cover later. Print, yes make sure your printer is set to print like that so there's no red line through it. It's just one click like that, it's an on off toggle. So just make sure that that layer is set to plot so it doesn't have the red line.
So what you've done, you've created a whole new layer in your DraftSight drawing. You now click on OK and you'll notice that if I go to the layer dropdown, you'll see that there's my A-Windows layer there ready to be used if I need it. So I'll just Escape there to lose the dropdown menu. That's how quick and easy it is to set up a new layer in any DraftSight drawing.
