- [Voiceover] One of the most important metadata elements for a book is its subject categories. We all use subject categories to find books. We use them at the library to pick out which section of the building to go to, and what bookshelf to look at. And we use them online to filter out the books that are not what we want to read. There are three main subject category standards: BISAC, in the United States, BIC, in the United Kingdom, and a new international standard called Thema. Let's dive into these three different subject category standards and clarify a little bit about how they work. BISAC stands for Book Industry Standards and Communications. BISAC was developed by the Book Industry Study Group, or BISG, a non-profit based in the U.S. When BISG launched the BISAC subject category standard, there was a growing need for standardization in metadata.
