- [Instructor] Now that we know about the three types of subject categories, let's talk about some best practices and how to actually use your subject categories. Always include at least one subject category for your book. If that one category covers the contents well, then just stick to using one. However, you can include more, the best practice is no more than five, and you should if there are more categories that apply. Always prioritize your categories. The first one in the ONIX file will be considered the main category. Some retailers only take one, so prioritization is important. ONIX 3 also allows you to include a main category flag, but don't rely on all retailers recognizing that. Only pick relevant categories. Don't pick a category just because it sounds good, or you think the book can sell better in that category.
