- [Narrator] While you may not think of a cover image or other files as Metadata, they actually are. Actually, the cover image of your book is arguably one of the most important pieces of data that you can provide to a retailer. In 2011, Nielsen did a study and published a white paper called The Link Between Metadata and Sales. The study found that "The addition of an image has a strong impact on average sales, of 268% in comparison to titles without an image." So yes, we do judge a book by it's cover. With that in mind, here are a few best practices that you should consider when designing your cover image. First, have it professionally designed. This may sound like a silly thing to say, but it is important that you have a professional cover designer create it for you. Not all illustrators or designers are created equal.
