- [Instructor] How do we handle incidents? They're high-stress. Multiple things may be going wrong. Various people from different teams may be needed to resolve the problem. How can you bring order from the chaos? As a tech professional, I've worked incidents pretty much my entire career. But in 2008, at the Velocity Conference, I saw a great presentation by Brent Chapman called "Incident Command for IT: "What We Can Learn from the Fire Department." Brent went on to found the incident management program in the SRE organization at Google. We explained that real-world incident responders face the same problems, with even higher stakes, and that they had to come up with a way to effectively coordinate response, the Incident Command System. The ICS was created in 1968 to help multi-agency response to massive wildfires in California and quickly became the model for incident response in the US and abroad.
