What is security testing?

- [Instructor] Security testing is essentially using tools and techniques to ensure that the security of a piece of software and infrastructure are known. Security vulnerabilities within an application's code base are highlighted so a development team can go about fixing them. Now, before we put on our dark hoodies and sit in a room with a laptop trying to break into secure systems, let's clear up some terminology. Hacking is usually referred to as black hat hacking, whereby an attacker, someone who wants access to a system that is not their own, attempts to find and exploit a system's vulnerabilities to gain access and elevate their own privileges. Anything that uses the term testing in regards to security, such as security testing, penetration testing, and vulnerability testing is usually referred to as white hat hacking.
