- [Instructor] Each computer has an identifier when it requests and sends information over the Internet. This identifier is called an IP address, or Internet Protocol Address. You may have heard this term before, but this address is assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. This department ensures that every computer has a unique IP address so that every computer on the Internet knows exactly where to find every other machine. What does this address look like? It's a series of digits separated by dots or colons. When the Internet was first created we had IPv4. These IP addresses consisted of four pairs of digits. But with the Internet's expansion, all of the IP addresses were used up. Because of this, IPv6 was created, and IPv6 addresses are much longer, containing numbers and letters, and chunks are separated by colons.
