- [Instructor] Implementing an incident response program is more easily said and done, and I've done it a few times. People are notoriously bad at reading documentation. You have to train them and retrain them. I found that when a team first takes on the role of incident response, you can train them but until they have incidents under their belt, they don't get it. Existing incident responders need retraining and recertification on a frequent cadence. People just plain forget things you know for a fact that they knew and were doing just six months ago. One piece of advice I have on IM training is to not just tell everyone what to do. People tune out. Another tip from David Marquet's book about his experience in nuclear submarine operations is to certify the team, make them describe what actions they're going to take, what thought processes they're going to go through. The person in charge of incident response should be satisfied that a new responder understands their responsibilities…
