- We know how to make so many amazing things with technology, right? But somehow we all missed that day in school when they taught us how to think through consequences of what we built. Actually, it was never taught. The headlines are full of stories about negative impacts that have resulted from some of the most popular technology products in the world. You may have experienced some of these harms personally, either as a maker or a consumer. This course is about harmful, unintended consequences that can result from new technology, even when created with good intentions. And although this is a serious topic, we're going to have some fun along the way as I show you examples of tech run amok and how you can take steps to avoid these types of mistakes yourself. I'll demonstrate a technique to envision and prevent future problems using eight categories of emerging risks, also known as the wheel of misfortune. Along with special guests, I'll dive into each emerging risk category to show how they could impact technology, products or services. Then, I'll explain how using a simple checklist can be a powerful and effective tool for building ethical products and how you can customize checklists for your own products. Finally, I'll outline steps to make changes stick and to hold your team and yourself accountable for technology that is created responsibly and ethically. Hi, I'm Raina Kumra.
