- As a hiring manager, I make sure engineers speak to someone in one of three non-tech teams like policy, PR and sales. Let me explain why. When I wrote code back in the day, I routinely complained about customers changing their minds and sales not pushing back. That routinely caused changes in technical design and added to my workload. Most other engineers complained as well, however, I decided to complain to the account manager my team worked with. I explained to her how constant context switching disrupted existing commitments and led to subpar solutions. She felt it'd be helpful if I talked directly to my engineering counterpart at the customer's end. Because she and I had a good working relationship, she trusted me to talk to the customer directly, something not common in our company at the time.
