- Regular reflection is a critical component of continuous improvement. Meanings that provide a framework to help teams think through improvement opportunities are commonly referred to as retrospectives a term popularized by Norman Kerth in his book Project Retrospectives: A Handbook for Team Reviews from 2001. shame and blame from the conversation with what he calls the prime directive. Regardless of what we discover we must understand, and truly believe that everyone did the best job he or she could given what was known at the time his or her skills and abilities the resources available and the situation at hand. At the end of the book he listed some questions which teams have adapted to facilitate their own discussions. In 2006, Esther Derby and Diana Larsen published the book Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great which offered an expanded framework for facilitating retrospective discussions.
