- N-Tier architectures have become so routine that the average developer doesn't think much about it. They just use layers appropriate to their application, which were usually designed and written by someone more senior. For the most part, as an industry, we finally made N-Tier a routine part of any complex business application. Sometimes I interview a person who might have to design and write N-Tier layers. In that case, I'd like to know if they do that via imitation or if they really know how to design N-Tier to meet a particular set of circumstances. This is my question to find out. Diagram a typical N-Tier architecture on the whiteboard and explain the reasons for each layer. Then, assuming they seem to be conversant with N-Tier concepts, I have follow up questions to gauge depth. Has your thinking about N-Tier changed in the last few years? How?
