From the course: Women Transforming Tech: Building Your Brand

Promoting your personal brand

- I wish I knew this early on in my career. Mentorship, sponsorship, public speaking. They play such a huge role in selling your personal brand. Even though personally for me, early on in my career I had mentors who truly believed and recognized my strengths, even before I had a self discovery of what I was good at. And I'm so grateful to my mentors who pushed me beyond my comfort zone, and that has made me take on roles which I would have never dreamt early on I would have taken. So I've made it a point in last 10 years very consciously, any role I take on to build those mentorships. Ask for mentorship if I didn't have it. Whether it's in your immediate work group or whether it's outside. And actually I used that to sell my personal brand in two ways. One is by seeking feedback and advice. And I requested them to be very open, and then acting on that feedback. And that's how I used mentorship to basically sell and promote my personal brand. Truly mid career is when I realized networking, it was a huge game changer. I was an introvert and I didn't go to many conferences, but every interaction I had, whether it was on the personal or the professional front, I learned something new. And I knew if I had gaps in a skillset or a expertise, I knew whom to reach out to. And that's why I say it was a truly a game changer. And last three career jobs I had, they were all because of I kept my social media up to date. If there were major changes in my personal or professional life, I made it a point, I updated on my social media.
