- [Instructor] Let's start this discussion with a scenario. It's 3:00 AM and you're awakened by the sound of your phone, buzzing loudly over and over again. You squint through sleepy eyes to see a message alerting you that a service you manage is experiencing an outage. It turns out that you're on call and you've just gotten the page. Let's pause here for a moment and look at a few ways you can prepare for the best on-call experience before, during, and after your schedule shift. Before going on call, think about everything you'll need to handle an incident. I usually start by confirming that I have access to log into any services or systems that I'll need to use if I get paged. This includes credentials like usernames, and passwords, and SSH keys for making remote connections. If there are certain actions you need to take during an incident, try to automate them.
