- Onboarding a new person shouldn't be left to chance. It's an important opportunity to help your new hire successfully adopt the processes and culture of your team. It can also really speed up the time it takes them to become effective and understand the company's exceptions for them. I've heard horror stories from folks who felt completely lost their first week on a new job because nothing was set up for them. They didn't know what was expected and they didn't know who they should ask to find out. Don't let that happen to your team. I find it's best to break down your onboarding task into the following time buckets: day zero, day one, days two through five, the second week, and finally, the third week and beyond. Let's say tomorrow is Karen's first day on the engineering team. Let's walk through what a successful onboarding plan for her would look like.
