Offer advice to an unsuccessful candidate

- If you are rejecting a candidate because of inadequate soft skills, it's hard to give them good advice. No matter how you say it, there's a risk they perceive the advice as a personal attack. Telling someone they don't have a good attitude, for example, just never comes across well. But if the candidate was simply inexperienced, you might be able to turn them into an ally, despite rejecting them for this position. You can point out the gaps that were important to your decision about them, and suggest some professional development possibilities to work on those gaps. In one case, I pulled a book out of my shelf and gave it to them. In another case, I called up a couple of books on Amazon and offered to send links to them. Online training and other options are also good suggestions. If you do that, it's more likely they will say good things about you, such as, "I wasn't a fit for Data Dev Corp, "but they're pretty…
