My list of questions

- I began interviewing developers about 30 years ago. Back when I looked like this. After a few years I realized that some of the questions I came up with during interviews were broadly useful. So I started writing them down. A lot of things have changed, obviously, including my hair color. But some of my questions have been with me since then. That list of questions became one of my core elements for interviewing. This has become such an integral part of my process that when for one interview I couldn't find my list I felt more than a little uncomfortable without it. Over the years I've added and refined the questions on my list. The soft skill questions didn't change that much but technology related questions have naturally needed to evolve with the times. As I go through my list of questions I'll explain for each one why I ask it and what I'm looking for in a good answer. For some I'll suggest ways to alter the question to suit your particular needs. Remember, the interview process is about giving you and your team the best picture of the candidate. So you can make a good decision on who to bring on. To get that best impression as I mentioned earlier I don't ask every question of every candidate. For example some of the questions that judge technical depth are not appropriate for a junior developer. Some conceptual and architectural questions also apply more to those with deeper experience in the industry. It's up to you to match the questions to the candidate.
