- [Instructor] It's important to remember that a system's capabilities drive its service level indicators. The most important question you can ask to generate SLIs is what do your users care about? That said, often what users care about is difficult or impossible to measure. So, you'll need to think critically about how to approximate the users' needs. Do not start with what is easier to measure. If possible, partner with your product team to brainstorm things that are both measurable and have a direct business impact. When considering how to calculate service level indicators, it's likely that you will turn to your company's monitoring systems to find relevant metrics. As an example, consider the following eCommerce platform.
