- Networking is a key aspect of succeeding in the workplace today, and engineers don't always appreciate that. A lot of engineers believe, somewhat incorrectly, in my opinion, that if they do a great job, if their code works, if their product gets high levels of engagement, then they don't need to worry about explaining their work. In reality, though, it is important for engineers to still receive feedback about their ideas, explain to people what they have done and how it fits into some larger hole, solicit new projects for their teams, because at the end of the day, a manager only has so much bandwidth. For example, the teams that I've led have had historically anywhere between a few dozen people to hundreds of people reporting in to me, directly or indirectly.
