- In the year 2000, when I was a young, or at least younger, software developer working at a startup with a group of friends, we worked in an environment of long hours and rushing to get the code done. Sometimes the code barely worked, but we were forced to ship it to our customers anyway. It didn't feel right. Kent Beck published his book, "Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change," the year before in 1999. A few of us bought copies of the book and read it. We began adopting some of the practices in the book like test-first development, pair programming, continuous integration, and sustainable pace. I know that because we adopted the practices of XP, I was writing the best code of my life. And I think my friends would say the same thing.
