- At this point we've covered the interview from start to finish with a lot of emphasize on what questions to ask. I also have some general tips about interviewing that didn't fit into that flow. Let's look at them now. We'll start with first impressions. Have you ever had someone walk into an interview and your subconscious starting ringing alarm bells? Then you've seen the power of first impressions. Human beings are wired to form first impressions in less than five seconds. That's why recruiters encourage candidates to dress nicely. First impressions are formed mostly on a candidate's grooming, dress, posture, and overall body language. I find positive first impressions are helpful but far from perfect. About a third of the time I find that I correct my impression to something more negative as the interview progresses. I find negative first impressions to be far more reliable.
