- Once you've created your resume, it's time to export it, but which file formats are appropriate? Most employers expect either a Microsoft Word document or a PDF version of your resume. However, this may vary depending upon the company, so you should check the job posting for more information. Microsoft Word is the most popular word processor for writing documents and your files will be saved as a DOC or a DOCX format. It's not recommended to use OpenOffice to create and export your resume because the DOC or DOCX formats will be altered when opened in Microsoft Word. Two benefits of exporting a DOC or a DOCX format is that it's a common format used in many businesses and as a result, widely accepted. And when exported with Microsoft Word, it preserves your document formatting. But using these file types comes with some downsides.
