What is extended reality (XR): VR, AR, and MR?
- Oh, hi there, I was just playing around with my cool AR app using my fancy VR glasses. Unfortunately, I don't have an MR controller right now but at least I'm on the XR bandwagon, so that's something, right? Chances are you've heard people use these acronyms, VR or AR or MR or even XR when referring to some sort of glasses or fancy phone app, VR or Virtual Reality has been almost ready for decades and in the past few years we've started to see technologies emerging that make this reality a reality. To understand this technology and what it can do it's important to first understand the terminology, in particular what all these acronyms actually mean. So here is Morton's quick primer to all things VR-AR-MR-XR. Virtual Reality, or VR for short is the classic immersive experience where we put on glasses and earphones and other devices to replace the real world with a virtual one.
