- I get it, rejection hurts. Plus you don't want to convey the impression that you're applying for a job that you are unqualified for. That said, the mistake I've seen candidates make so often is deciding without any of research that they are not suited for a specific role. A while ago I gave you a sneak peek of the recruiting process. Let me lift the veil up a little further. Amid the chaotic and often unpredictable hiring process, the hiring manager and recruiter don't always know what they're looking for. That understanding often develops as they start doing telephone interviews, tap into their network, and as other stakeholders weigh in. As a candidate, you could influence this process more than you realize. If you're not sure about the role, ask questions. If the role does not look like it makes sense, weigh in and offer that feedback. At a minimum, explain how the role comes across to you.
